Headlands Wins Battle Of The Schools

On Thursday 18th March a group of Headlands school students travelled to Whitby to take part in ‘The Battle of the Schools’ an annual quiz in aid of Saint Catherine’s Hospice in Scarborough and hosted by Wes Stakes from Yorkshire Coast radio.

In the team were pupils from years seven to eleven: Rosa Wagner, Mason Yousif, Jordan Wrigley, Stephen Hirst, and Blaise Simpkin.

Headlands were up against teams from six different schools including: Scarborough College, Graham School, St Augustine’s School, Fyling Hall School and two teams from Whitby School.

After a nervous start Headlands gained in confidence and made steady ground against some strong opposition. Each team had three rounds: general knowledge, spelling and a themed round that was chosen at random. Keeping their heads under pressure Headlands picked up valuable points from the other teams’ wrong answers and gradually crept into the lead.

Before the final round Headlands was a clear first with St Augustine’s School and Graham School in a tie break situation which Graham School Won.

The final round was a buzzer round which Headlands won by a convincing five points to one. Mrs Stainthorpe the teacher who organised the trip said: ‘It was the first time we entered the competition so I’m delighted that we won. I’m proud of them all. They deserved to win and they are a credit to the school.’

Next year Headlands will host ‘The Battle of the Schools’. Watch this space.
