Dear Parents / Carers
Firstly, may I take this opportunity to thank the overwhelming majority of our parents / carers who remained calm following the recent bomb hoax.
Government guidance found here (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/bomb-threats guidance/procedures-for-handling-bomb-threats) states –
1.6 Media and communication
Avoid revealing details about specific incidents to the media or through social media without prior consultation with police. Do not provide details of the threat, the decision making process relating to evacuation (internal or external) or why a decision not to evacuate was taken.
Releasing details of the circumstances may:
be an objective of the hoaxer and provide them with a perceived credibility
cause unnecessary alarm to others
be used by those planning to target other venues
elicit copycat incidents
adversely affect the subsequent police investigation
Unfortunately, through social media today my team and I believe comments made have caused
unnecessary alarm to students, parents and staff. Despite our text this morning, students were still withdrawn from school by parents & carers. This has caused avoidable anxiety and disruption to “normal” school life – thereby providing potential credibility to the hoaxer(s) actions.
At Headlands School we have a positive working relationship with the local media (Bridlington Free Press & Bridlington Echo) and communicate directly and promptly with them information that is in the public interest. This includes information regarding such incidents. Please can we continue to follow due protocols together, to avoid unnecessary distress and disruption.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank parents / carers who continue to communicate with my team in a courteous and respectful manner. My team and I here at Headlands School take student and staff welfare incredibly seriously. Please can we continue to work together, especially in such serious matters as these, to ensure that the appropriate course of action can be followed and that student and staff welfare and safety is maintained.
Mrs S Bone
