As a result of including Rugby Union in the Girls PE curriculum and free membership of Bridlington Rugby Union Football Club we have seen unprecedented success in the growth of Girls Rugby at key stage three this year. With the help of the local club coaches, Paddy Waines and Callum Sanderson as well as Mellissa Freeman in year 11, we have seen a close knit group of Girls across years 7 and 8 take up the sport for the first time. All students have also had the opportunity this year to join the Rugby Club for free, with all membership fees being met by the School.

It would be normal to expect a group of students who have just taken up a brand new sport to potentially struggle when faced with a competitive situation. With this team however it could not have been further from the truth. Initially a three game series was organised against Bridlington School with the focus on developing game play each week by gradually introducing more rules to the matches each week. The team came through this test with flying colours. They won each game showing commitment, teamwork, sportsmanship and concentration in abundant levels! It was clear at this stage that this team could have the makings of being extremely successfull.

The next test for the Girls was a regional tournament organised by the Rugby Football Union where, once again, it may have been normal to expect to come up against a more experienced team with more skill. Once again however the girls defied this sterotype to defeat all before them and become East Riding champions! This was a fantastic achievement for what is a team in it's infancy.

The season ended with one more fixture against Driffield School. The girls again played fantastically to once more run out victorious. When we received an email asking for recommendations for girls to represent the county it was a no brainer for us to put every student forward! A handful of girls have taken up this opportunity and are due to attend trials for the Yorkshire squad in the coming weeks! For girls who only played rugby for the first team a few months ago this is an achievement that defies belief and one that they should be extremely proud of. Who knows, maybe one day we may see a Headlands alumni pulling on an England jersey!
